The Secret Billionaire Garbageman is exactly the kind of romance series that knows how dramatic it wants to be—and fully commits to it. It has a secret billionaire, a fake relationship, an evil ex, a cruel rich family, kidnapping, murder mysteries, wedding chaos, and even a heroic dog.
At the center of all this madness is a surprisingly sweet romance between Ethan and Hailey.
Short Plot Summary
Ethan MacAvoy looks like an ordinary garbage man, but he is secretly one of the richest men in the world. He is living undercover while trying to discover who supposedly murdered his sister. During this time, he becomes close to Hailey Smith, one of the few people who treats him with kindness without knowing anything about his money or real identity.
Hailey’s life falls apart when she catches her fiancé, Greg, cheating with her best friend, Cindy, only one day before their wedding. Desperate to escape the marriage her family is still trying to force on her, Hailey asks Ethan to marry her instead.
What begins as a practical arrangement quickly becomes real.

Main Tropes
The strongest trope is, of course, Secret Billionaire. The entire story is built around the fact that the audience knows Ethan is rich while most characters do not.
There is also Fake Relationship Turns Real. Hailey first asks Ethan to marry her because she needs an escape from Greg, while Ethan agrees because he wants to protect her. Their relationship slowly becomes something genuine.
Another important trope is He Falls for Her Because She Loved Him When He Had Nothing. Hailey treats Ethan with respect before she knows his true identity. That makes their romance much more meaningful.
The series also uses Cheating Ex, Forced Marriage, Rich Family vs Poor Love Interest, Protective Hero, Hidden Identity, Damsel in Distress, Wedding Interrupted, and Everyone Regrets Underestimating Him.
And, perhaps most importantly, it has Heroic Dog Saves the Day. Sparky deserves his own spin-off.
Characters
Ethan MacAvoy
He is extremely rich and powerful, but Hailey meets him when she believes he is only a garbage man.
What makes Ethan likeable is that he does not immediately reveal his identity when people insult him. He stays surprisingly calm through an almost impossible amount of humiliation. More importantly, he protects Hailey when her own family refuses to protect her.
Actor – Ryder Dillard.
Hailey Smith
She is kind without being interested in status. Before she knows Ethan is rich, she brings him coffee, believes he is a good person, and continues defending him when everyone around her sees him as worthless.
Her biggest weakness is that she accepts far too much abuse from her family. However, that is also part of her character journey.
Actress – Jameson Leigh Muntz.
Greg
Greg is almost impressively terrible.
He cheats on Hailey, wants to use their marriage for business, looks down on poor people, constantly attacks Ethan, and eventually turns out to be connected to the darkest part of the story.
Cindy
Cindy somehow manages to compete with Greg for the title of Worst Person in the Series.
She betrays Hailey, becomes obsessed with Ethan after discovering that he is rich, and later goes to extreme lengths to get what she wants. Her behavior is completely chaotic, but she is also entertaining because there is almost no limit to how far she will go.
Grandma Rose
Grandma Rose is easily one of my favorite characters.
While the rest of Hailey’s family judges Ethan because of his supposed job, Rose simply says that she does not care what he does for a living as long as he is a good man who takes care of Hailey.
Sparky
Sparky is a very good boy.
That is the entire review.
My Personal Opinion
As a romance lover, I think the strongest part of The Secret Billionaire Garbageman is its central fantasy.
Hailey chooses Ethan when she thinks he has nothing.
That is exactly why the secret billionaire trope works so well here. The pleasure is not simply watching a poor man become rich. The audience already knows Ethan is rich. The pleasure comes from seeing which characters respect him when they believe there is nothing to gain from him.
And Hailey passes that test immediately.
Their romance is sweet because they are both outsiders in different ways. Ethan is hiding from his real world, while Hailey feels unwanted inside her own family. Together, they slowly create a place where both of them feel accepted.
However, the series can become very repetitive. A large part of the middle story follows the same pattern:
Someone insults Ethan because he is a garbage man.
Ethan quietly reveals evidence that he might be powerful.
Nobody believes him.
They insult him again.
Someone important appears and treats Ethan with respect.
Everyone becomes confused.
Then the cycle begins again.
It is fun at first, and some of these scenes are genuinely satisfying, but there are so many that the secret identity story begins to feel stretched.
The villains are also extremely exaggerated. Almost every rich person Ethan meets seems ready to attack someone simply for being poor. There is very little moral grey area. You immediately know who is good because they treat the “garbage man” like a human being.
My biggest criticism is actually connected to the romance. I would have liked Hailey to challenge Ethan more after learning the truth. She trusted him while knowing almost nothing about his real life. His reasons for hiding his identity make sense, but love needs honesty too. Giving this conflict more time could have made their final relationship feel even stronger.
Conclusion
The Secret Billionaire Garbageman is messy, ridiculous, dramatic, romantic, and very addictive.
It is not a series to watch for realism. It is a series to watch because you want to see an arrogant villain laugh at a “poor garbage man” five minutes before discovering that he owns half the world.
Under all the crazy twists, however, there is a simple romantic idea that works very well: the right person will see your value before they know your status.
Hailey loves the man before she discovers the billionaire.
And that is what makes Ethan and Hailey’s love story worth rooting for.
