My opinion
Harder Than Diamonds understands how to create strong hooks. A ruined wedding, a mysterious stranger, the father reveal, a secret contract, a forbidden room, and a corrupt diamond company all appear very quickly. Almost every episode ends with a new threat, revelation, or romantic challenge.
The chemistry between Meggie and Arthur is the strongest part of the series. Their conversations are full of tension because Arthur expects obedience while Meggie refuses to become completely submissive. The diamond imagery also works well: Arthur calls Meggie an “uncut diamond,” but she is stronger and more difficult to shape than he expects.
However, Arthur often ignores Meggie’s boundaries, locks her inside a room, controls what she wears, and describes her as something that belongs to him. The series sometimes presents protection and possession as the same thing. Viewers who prefer healthy and equal relationships may find this uncomfortable.
Meggie is brave, but the story occasionally removes her power simply to create another shocking scene. Her journey would feel stronger if she made more important decisions without being forced by Arthur, Harry, her mother, or her brother’s condition.
